Absen Releases New White Paper Exploring Energy Efficiency in Outdoor LED Displays

October 22, 2026 – Absen has officially released its latest Outdoor LED Display Energy-Saving Technology White Paper. The report explores how advances in LED technology can help display owners and operators reduce energy consumption, manage operating expenses, and improve the long-term return on investment (ROI) of outdoor LED installations.

As digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertising, large-format digital displays, and immersive outdoor experiences continue to expand, energy efficiency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for businesses investing in LED technology. From commercial developments and transportation hubs to entertainment venues and digital billboards, operators must balance high brightness and visual performance with energy consumption, maintenance requirements, and total cost of ownership.

The new white paper examines these challenges and provides a technical framework for evaluating energy-efficient outdoor LED solutions, including practical performance comparisons and real-world project examples.

Energy Efficiency in Outdoor LED Display Technology White Paper

A Systemwide Approach to Energy Efficiency

Rather than focusing solely on reducing display brightness, the white paper identifies opportunities to improve efficiency across the entire LED system, including light sources, power supplies, control technology, and thermal management.

The report highlights five technologies contributing to improved energy performance:

  • Energy-efficient LED light sources designed to deliver high brightness with reduced power consumption.
  • Optimized power conversion to minimize energy losses and improve electrical efficiency.
  • IDES AI-powered control technology that dynamically adjusts power consumption based on display content and operating conditions.
  • Fanless passive cooling to reduce energy consumption associated with traditional cooling systems.
  • Cloud-based intelligent control for centralized monitoring and energy management.

These technologies are integrated into Absen’s A25 Series of outdoor LED displays, which can achieve more than 50% overall energy savings under the testing conditions detailed in the white paper.

“Improving energy efficiency in outdoor LED displays requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond simply reducing brightness,” said the Technical Lead at Absen. “By optimizing the entire display system, we can help customers reduce long-term operating costs while maintaining the brightness, image quality, and reliability their applications demand.”

Looking Beyond Energy Consumption to Total Cost of Ownership

For outdoor LED display owners and operators, electricity costs represent only one part of the overall investment.

The white paper examines how display size, operating hours, local electricity rates, cooling requirements, and electrical infrastructure can influence long-term operating expenses.

Through application-specific financial models, the report evaluates potential savings across three key areas: electricity consumption, power distribution infrastructure, and ongoing maintenance and operations.

These comparisons provide businesses with a more comprehensive framework for evaluating the financial benefits of energy-efficient LED technology, whether planning a new installation or upgrading an existing display.

Real-World Installations Demonstrate Measurable Results

The report also highlights international projects demonstrating the application of energy-efficient LED technology in demanding outdoor environments.

In the United Kingdom, Absen supplied more than 1,000 square meters of outdoor LED displays for Clear Channel transportation advertising projects across London and Manchester. Replacing existing digital billboards reduced total site energy consumption by approximately one-third. The project also received a TÜV SÜD Carbon Footprint Verification Report.

Another installation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, features a 750-square-meter landmark display designed to perform in the region’s hot, humid climate while delivering more than 50% energy savings under the reported operating conditions.

These projects illustrate how improvements in LED efficiency, power management, and thermal design can contribute to reduced operating costs across a range of outdoor applications.

Advancing the Future of Outdoor LED Technology

Absen continues to invest in research and development focused on improving LED efficiency, intelligent power management, and thermal performance.

According to the company’s technology roadmap, future developments include additional reductions in power consumption, advances in low-power Micro LED technology, and new approaches to energy management and storage.

With the release of the Outdoor LED Display Energy-Saving Technology White Paper, Absen aims to provide display owners, advertising operators, integrators, and other industry professionals with practical information to support more informed purchasing and operational decisions.
